Davenport: California Seceding From President Trump’s U.S.

To the list of 23 celebrities who have said they are leaving the country if Donald Trump became President, we can now add one of the 50 states.  An effort is under way for California to secede from Donald Trump’s United States. “Calexit” seeks a ballot initiative or a constitutional amendment for California to leave the Union.

Perhaps they should study their American history because the last time this was tried, by the Confederate States in the 1860s, it ended rather badly.  There is simply no constitutional basis for nullification or exit from the Union.

Meanwhile, San Francisco’s Mayor said they are doubling down on being a sanctuary city, openly welcoming and harboring people who violate the federal immigration laws.  San Franciscans are incensed that Trump might pull their federal money for this.

Californians live in a bit of a dream world, voting radically differently than most any place else in the U.S.  But even California must learn that elections have consequences.

Medved: How to Improve Health, Well-Being and Marriage

A new analysis from the Harvard School of Public Health reports on a powerful pattern of behavior that produces substantial benefits in terms of increased longevity, enhanced physical and emotional well-being and—especially—greater marital stability.

Confirming many other previous studies, Professor Tyler J. VanderWeele shows that those who attend religious services regularly suffer much lower rates of early mortality, depression and divorce, reporting higher levels of marital and personal satisfaction. He doesn’t speculate about the supernatural efficacy of prayer, but VanderWeele’s research does cite the communal support provided by religious institutions, and the impact of faith-based teachings in encouraging us to value the welfare of others.

In the holiday season when even the unchurched like to show up for services, the Harvard study shows that public worship can bring benefits during the rest of the year as well.

Mohler: A Date That Still Lives in Infamy

75 years ago today, at 7:48 am in Hawaii, forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. The attack involved 353 aircraft flown from six Japanese aircraft carriers. The attack was savage, intended to destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet before Japan would even declare war.

By the end of the day more than 2,000 Americans would be dead, almost 1,200 wounded. President Roosevelt, asking Congress for a declaration of war, called December 7, 1941 “a date that will live in infamy.”

And so it does, even as our brave and honored veterans of Pearl Harbor and World War II are passing from our midst. December 7, 1941 is still a date that lives in infamy.

LaBerge: Donald Trump: Pragmatist

President Barack Obama recently observed that Donald Trump is not ideological, but pragmatic. I agree. Donald Trump is a pragmatist who values the “deal” above all else.

Pragmatists are often morally flexible and their decision making is based on “what gets the job done” (as opposed to being guided by moral absolutes).

This may challenge the expectations of ideological conservatives and people of convictional faith who supported Trump. Who he now chooses to surround himself with matters immensely.

Those who are ideologically conservative or convictional about their faith have already made decisions that limit the range of options in any given situation. Pragmatists don’t tend to see such a bounded set of options.

Let’s hope that Trump, does indeed, surround himself with the best and brightest.

And may they be men and women of conviction.
