Albert Mohler: Syria Crosses The Red Line

Billy Graham

The U.S. sent an unmistakable signal Thursday night—and it was sent late, and it was sent in the form of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from two U.S. Navy destroyers in the Mediterranean sea. They were fired at the very same Syrian air base from which it is now believed the Syrian government had sent an attack on its own people, an attack in the form of chemical weapons—identified as sarin nerve gas—killing upwards of 80 people.

Sarin gas is banned by every civilized nation and international treaty, and the use of it is considered a war crime.

In a statement he made to the American people late Thursday night, President Trump said the strike was in the vital national security interest of the United States. He went on to say,

“We ask for God’s wisdom as we face the challenge of our very troubled world.”

Will this military action bring an end to the Syrian civil war? Almost assuredly not. Will it make a difference? As the President said, we must pray so.

Albert Mohler: Yet Another Lesson From California

Billy Graham

The Attorney General of California recently announced that he is filing 15 felony counts against the two undercover filmmakers from the Center for Medical Progress who have exposed Planned Parenthood in a series of videos.

David French, writing at National Review, points out that this is a case of selective prosecution. Back in 2014, a group known as Mercy for Animals released an undercover video that showed widespread animal abuse, they claimed, and cruelty at one of the largest duck farms in California. The state responded by investigating the farm. Apparently, in California, the lives of ducks are more important than the lives of unborn human beings.

The reality is that California is undeniably guilty of selective enforcement. It is using a law against these two activists that is not used against others in a similar situation.

For these two journalists and for the larger pro-life movement, at least in the state of California, the trial is only beginning.

Gorsuch: Eminently Qualified

Billy Graham

New York Senator Charles Schumer recently announced that he and his Democratic colleagues in the Senate will filibuster the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court.

The reality is that if there is anyone qualified to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, it is Judge Neil Gorsuch.

Nonetheless, what is at stake is not the judge’s qualifications, but his understanding of the constitution as a text limited by its words and sentences and the intention of its authors, rather than an evolving text to be interpreted by contemporary judges according to their own current political understanding.

If indeed the Democrats follow through with a filibuster on the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch, then Republicans must change the rules of the Senate, to make certain that this presidential nominee sits on the United States Supreme Court.

The battle over the Court in this generation is not happening by accident. It is happening precisely because both sides understand just how much is truly at stake.

The Black Robe

Billy Graham

The nation is now engaged in a one of our most important democratic traditions: namely, the confirmation hearings for a Supreme Court justice. In this case, for Judge Neil Gorsuch, the first nominee of President Donald Trump.

One of the most important observations came from Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska. He pointed to the symbolic nature of the robe that a justice wears, a black robe. It is neither a blue robe nor a red robe, neither Democratic nor Republican.

In our nation’s constitutional system, the judiciary is intended to be nonpartisan. Nonetheless, the reality is that the Court has become highly partisan, especially over the last half-century. We’ve also seen that there is a correlation between the constitutional philosophy that a justice takes to the Court and the partisan identity of the President who has appointed that justice.

But it was a service to the country that Senator Sasse expressed that ideal and that was very important for Americans to hear.

Chuck Schumer’s Deception

Billy Graham

The Democratic leader of the United States, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, recently published a highly misleading tweet. In it he said, “#Trumpcare cuts Planned Parenthood Federation of America funds, hurting millions of women who turn there for mammograms, maternity care, cancer screenings & more.”

To its credit, the Washington Post decided to fact check that claim.

The fact check said, “Planned Parenthood does referrals for mammograms, and some affiliates host free mammography mobile vans for low-income and uninsured women. It does not have mammogram machines at its affiliate clinics. The Food and Drug Administration’s list, updated weekly, of certified mammography facilities does not list any (that is not a single) Planned Parenthood clinic.”

What we actually know is no one actually turns to Planned Parenthood for mammograms, they’re not even a certified mammography facility.

The Washington Post deserves credit for pointing out Senator Schumer’s three-Pinocchio tweet.

Albert Mohler: The Supreme Court Says, “No

Billy Graham

Sometimes history is made in just one sentence. That was the case when the United States Supreme Court handed down a one-sentence statement saying that it will not hear the case concerning the big question of transgender rights, specifically the rights of transgender students in the public schools.

When the Supreme Court does take a case on this issue, one question will be the interpretation of a 1975 regulation that allows schools to provide “separate toilet, locker rooms and shower facilities on the basis of sex.”

Back in 1975 Congress had absolutely no question what it meant when it referred to biological sex. And furthermore, we need to admit that even right now across our culture virtually no one has a major question about the definition of biological sex.

The new reality is that gender identity and biological sex are actually two different things. That might well be the key question that the Supreme Court will eventually have to answer.

Trump Rescinds Obama Demand that Schools Allow Transgenders in Preferred Bathrooms

President Trump rescinded Obama-era guidance transgender students

Or, as ABC News put it with their own spin, “rescinded Obama-era guidance directing schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity” (ABC News).  With a little more spin, CNN insists “The Trump administration on Wednesday night withdrew Obama-era protections for transgender students” (CNN).  From another story:  It will now be up to states and school districts to interpret whether federal sex discrimination law applies to gender identity (CBS News).  Dr. Albert Mohler looks at the media framing of the issue (Albert Mohler). Related audio from the White House (SONNetwork).
