Michael Medved: Ilhan Omar’s Grotesque Lies About American “Genocide”

Representative Ilhan Omar, known for demagoguery about the Middle East, recently displayed her appalling ignorance about the United States.

Just last week, 405 members of Congress united to condemn the mass slaughter of Armenian Christians by Turkish Muslims in 1915. As one of only 14 House members refusing to support this resolution, Omar declared: “A true acknowledgment of historical crimes against humanity must include … Native American genocide, which took the lives of hundreds of millions of indigenous people in this country.”

In fact, peak indigenous population before the arrival of Europeans amounted to 3 to 5 million, and no credentialed historian has ever claimed than more than 18 million lived on this continent. Omar’s claim of “hundreds of millions” of victims laughably misses the mark and historians agree that the vast majority of native losses came through disease, not massacres.

Ilhan Omar’s instinct to insult and assault the USA flippantly disregards historical facts.

Michael Medved: Tolerating Hatred in Their Midst

Six months to the day of the infamous synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh, neo-Nazi terrorism struck again with a murderous rampage at a vibrant Hassidic congregation in suburban San Diego.

The attack occurred days after the New York Times and Representative Ilhan Omar both outrageously described Jesus as a “Palestinian”—obscuring the well-known fact that he identified as Jewish, both ethnically and religiously.

It also came at a time when the Times had to apologize for a vile anti-Semitic cartoon showing the Prime Minister of Israel as a dog, leading a blind, yarmulke-wearing Trump.

No, it’s not true that Democrats have become “anti-Jewish”—the overwhelming majority of Jewish voters continue to identify as Democrats and play leadership roles in the party.

But facing an undeniable upsurge in anti-Semitism, Democrats have been reluctant to call-out the haters in their midst, especially in contrast with the GOP and its consistent support for Israel and religious liberty.

Michael Medved: A Message to Representative Omar

Imagine if conservatives had attacked freshman Congress member Ilhan Omar by questioning her loyalty to the United States and suggesting that she cared more about her Muslim faith or her Somali homeland than she did about America.

Democrats along with all right-thinking people would have been outraged at the bigoted nature of such an assault, but Omar herself has repeatedly slammed her pro-Israel colleagues on a similarly unacceptable basis. Her most recent comments claim that Israel supporters “push for allegiance to a foreign country.”

This is no more appropriate than prior slanders against Catholic Americans for “allegiance” to the Vatican over loyalty to America, or potential claims against Omar and Muslim colleagues for giving devotion to Islam above the Constitution.

It’s always okay to challenge the judgment of Jewish or Christian supporters of Israel, but it’s never appropriate to question their patriotism.
