Mike Gallagher dissects Piers Morgan column criticizing U.S. policy in Ukraine

Mike Gallagher: So, Piers Morgan writes a piece that I want to share with you and I want to get your reaction to it.

Piers Morgan, you know him, the Brit, you know, used to be on CNN. Provocative guy, has a lot of good takes on social media. He asks in this column that we've posted at mikeonline.com. You can read it along with me or read it in its entirety or copy and paste it.

“What will it take, America? Seriously,” this Brit asks. “What more does Vladimir Putin need to do before the world's number one superpower, leader of the free world, and possessor of the greatest military force in history, stops him? The cowardly Russian gangster has illegally invaded a democratic sovereign country and is now using illegal cluster bombs to murder innocent women and children in Ukrainian cities.

“Everyone seems in agreement,” he says, “that this is a flagrant breach of international law, a disgustingly immoral act, and Putin is a despicable war criminal. But nobody dares stop him. Oh, the Ukrainians are trying to,” he writes, “and my God, what a magnificently courageous and resilient people they’re showing themselves to be, led by their stupendously inspiring president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I'm in awe of their heroism, their determination, their stomach for the fight, despite overwhelmingly bad odds against a far larger and better-equipped enemy. Sadly, that awe doesn't extend to President Biden, who seems to think Putin can be defeated by Ukrainian resistance and Western financial punishment alone. He can't.

“Putin is one of the world's richest men thanks to decades of ruthlessly feathering his own nest with the ill-gotten gains of his corrupt regime. He doesn't give a damn about sanctions, or the collapsing price of the ruble, or a few of his oligarch cronies getting a slap in the wallet. He's priced all the economic fallout into his evil master plan.

“Putin is a dictator – a vile, soulless, cynical bullyboy.”

“Putin is a dictator,” he writes, “a vile, soulless, cynical bullyboy who doesn't care how many corpses he creates to achieve his imperial ambitions. The only language men like him understand is force, not being told he’s temporarily down to his last $50 billion. But right now,” writes Piers Morgan, “he senses weakness among those with the capability to curb his warmongering, and especially in an American president whom he witnessed desert the Afghan people to the Taliban wolves last summer. Putin's not going be nuking anyone, not so long as America has the power to vaporize him and his entire country in seconds. That's the whole point of the nuclear deterrent.”

So, Piers Morgan says, when do we stop this guy? “Last night, billionaire U.S investor, Bill Ackman tweeted Biden, urging him to do more. The billionaire said, ‘Is there a point at which we say it is un-American to sit back and watch this transpire? Putin is rattling the nuclear saber as he gets more desperate. What if? Do we wait for him to kill millions before we intervene? What precedent are we continuing to set by allowing this to play out?”’

Piers Morgan says, “He's right, isn't he? And there's a good precedent for this. When Saddam Hussein invaded Iraq's neighboring state of Kuwait in 1990, America led a NATO military intervention, Desert Storm, that sent him and his forces packing in 43 days. President George H.W. Bush explained his decision by saying, ‘The terrible crimes and tortures committed by Saddam's henchman are an affront to mankind. No nation will be permitted to brutally assault its neighbor.’ Exactly.”

Piers Morgan says, “The only difference between Saddam Hussein and Vladimir Putin is that Putin has nuclear weapons. But the moral argument for America intervening militarily in Ukraine is the same as it was in Kuwait 32 years ago,” he says. “If the U.S. lets Putin use his nuke threats to scare them off, Russia will continue its nation-seizing rampage like the Nazis did in 1938-39 and other foes like China and North Korea may feel emboldened to do the same. It will be like waving a white flag of surrender. This feels very un-American,” Piers Morgan writes.

Piers Morgan asks, “Since when did America stand by as dictators literally cluster-bombed innocents?” Piers Morgan says, “It's time that Biden call Putin's bluff, his BS nuclear bluff.” He's not going to nuke anybody, says Piers Morgan.

I have said over and over again that we should not let one hair on one American soldier's head be harmed by this conflict. This is not our fight. But yet, if you believe in the possibility that Putin has gone bat-crap crazy and isn't listening to his generals, isn't listening to any of his advisors – you’ve seen Putin meet with his advisors? He's worse than the far-left wing lunatics that drive around in their Prius’ with three masks on in the car with the windows closed. He sits at the end of a table that’s about 50 feet long. He's apparently so afraid of COVID he doesn't get within a mile of his advisors. They're all down together, huddled together. He doesn't care if they give each other COVID. He ain't gonna get it. He is at the end of this table. Hey Putin, ever hear of rapid tests? You can give your men tests! Gosh, I thought I was nervous.

So, if Putin is going down this path, at what point do we step in and say, enough is enough? I can't stop thinking about this convoy. You know, if you could take pictures of a convoy from a satellite, you can drop bombs on them. You can hit them with weaponry. You could blow that convoy to smithereens. Forty miles? That's a piece of cake for the United States. We could take the whole thing out. The European Union could align and take it all out. Do we wait for this convoy to approach Kyiv and slaughter these innocents? It's a very difficult question. If you argue with me about it and say we shouldn't even think about it, I'll understand it. But what about the humanity of it all?

“What about the immorality, the evil of what Putin is doing?"

What about the immorality, the evil of what Putin is doing? And I think Piers Morgan makes a compelling case. We've done it before. America led a NATO military intervention when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Now, the only difference between Saddam Hussein and Vladimir Putin is that Putin has nukes. And incidentally, that may be enough of a difference to stop us from going near it. That very well may be enough of an argument to say, you kidding me? But if we're trying to cripple Russia's economy, I got an idea. Maybe we ought to consider crippling the military convoy that's about to wreak death and bloodshed and hell upon the Ukrainian people. What must it feel like to be a Ukrainian? We've gotten calls from Ukrainians in Chicago and Philadelphia and New York. Call me today. Tell me what you think as you must be in total fear, as you see images of this convoy rolling towards Kyiv. What should we do about it?
